Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that the government is thinking of deploying the army to control the situation in the Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar after multiple violent incident.
The Home Minister told this to Gwen Lewis, the United Nations Resident Representative assigned to Dhaka at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
Asaduzzaman Khan said, ‘We have said that in a small place, 1.2 million people are here, there will be various problems; Violence will be created from those problems. They are not the only ones dying in this violence. Two officers of our army and air force also died. We are very aware of this, we are also increasing our capacity to stop the killing. That’s what we told her (Gwen Lewis).’
In this regard, the minister said, “Army is always on standby, if necessary, we will also deploy the army. We have created SOP, and it will be used if needed.”
More than 1.2 million Rohingya who fled the country in the face of brutal repression by the Myanmar army live in Teknaf and Ukhiya in Cox’s Bazar. Camps have been made there for them. But there is continuous conflict. In the last five and a half years, 132 murders have occurred there, according to the police in a parliamentary committee meeting recently.
Asaduzzaman Khan said that he had spoken with the UN official about the various problems faced by the local people of Teknaf and Ukhiya in providing shelter to the Rohingyas. He said, “We have said that they (Rohingyas) will return to their motherland as early as possible. We think you (UN) will do the same.”
