Karim Khan, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), in an interview with CNN stated the justice process must be completed quickly so that the Rohingyas get justice. The world cannot turn its back on such an ‘ongoing crisis.’
International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim AA Khan arrived in Bangladesh on a four-day visit to investigate Rohingya torture. He collected information and testimonies from Rohingya survivors of Myanmar’s military genocide.
In an exclusive interview with CNN, Karim Khan said, “The condition of these Rohingya camps is heartbreaking. Justice must be accelerated for the Rohingyas here. But the world is now more focused on Ukraine and other countries. But Rohingyas also have the right to get justice.”
“The big difference is that we have access to Ukraine, we don’t have access to Myanmar,” Khan said. “My presence here, my presence last year and the team’s almost constant presence here over the last year … is evidence of the fact they’ve not been forgotten.”
Rohingyas fled to Bangladesh after the attack in Myanmar’s Rakhine state in August 2017. More than seven million Rohingya are living in dirty and unsanitary overcrowded refugee camps.
In 2019, ICC judges authorized a full investigation into torture and crimes against humanity committed against the Rohingya. These include the handling of violence, forced deportations, and ethnic and religious persecution.
