Indian assistance to Myanmar reaches approximately $1.4 billion

India in recent years has extended its investment, assistance and cooperation in Myanmar and India’s assistance to Myanmar is around $1.4 billion according to IndiaExpress reporting.

The followings are some of the joint mega projects:

  • To construct 69 bridges on the Trilateral Highway
  • To operationalise Sittwe Port by the first quarter of 2021.
  • Upgradation of border infrastructure.
  • Power and energy cooperation.
  • Restoration work on earthquake-damaged pagodas in Bagan.
  • Defence cooperation projects including sending a team for the deployment of Meteorological squadrons this month.
  • Invitation of Myanmar representative to visit the Information Fusion Centre for the Indian Ocean Region

Yesterday, India’s Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla in the virtual presence of Myanmar delegation led by Permanent Secretary U Soe Han announced that India will provide debt service relief under the G-20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative.
