The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has embarked on a global initiative to preserve and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Rohingya community through the World Tour of the Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre (RCMC) in Bangladesh. This tour aims to highlight the unique cultural legacy of the Rohingya people and draw international attention to their ongoing struggles.
The RCMC, established in Cox’s Bazar, serves as a cultural repository that documents and showcases the traditions, crafts, and history of the Rohingya community. By bringing this cultural center to a global audience, IOM hopes to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Rohingya heritage while simultaneously raising awareness about the challenges faced by this displaced population.
In conjunction with the tour, IOM Director General Amy Pope participated in a high-level dialogue on the future of migration and Bangladesh. The discussions, which involved key stakeholders, focused on developing policies and strategies to address the complex migration issues affecting the country and the wider region.
The international community has shown robust support for IOM’s initiatives in Bangladesh. Dominant donor countries have pledged significant contributions to IOM’s emergency and development projects, which will play a crucial role in addressing the urgent needs of Rohingya refugees and other vulnerable groups in the region. In March 2024, IOM launched an appeal for USD 119 million to support nearly a million Rohingya refugees residing in Cox’s Bazar, as well as the local communities that have generously welcomed them.
During her visit, DG Pope met with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, commending the government’s commitment to tackling the Rohingya refugee crisis and broader migration challenges. The meeting underscored the strong partnership between IOM and the Bangladeshi government in seeking sustainable solutions for displaced populations.
The World Tour of the Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre and the ongoing dialogue on migration policies reflect IOM’s unwavering commitment to supporting vulnerable communities and promoting sustainable migration solutions. By bringing the story of the Rohingya people to the world stage, IOM aims to inspire global solidarity and action towards resolving one of the most pressing humanitarian crises of our time.
