Bangladesh Coast Guard and local police have rescued twenty eight people, including women and children, from an attempted trafficking operation near Baharchara in Teknaf. The rescue took place early on November 25 after authorities received information that the group was being prepared for an illegal sea journey to Malaysia.
Lieutenant Commander Siam ul Haq, media officer of the Coast Guard, said teams moved quickly to intercept the traffickers’ plans. He said organised groups have been targeting both Bangladeshis and Rohingya by offering false promises of good jobs and higher income abroad, leaving many vulnerable people at risk of exploitation.
Authorities said the traffickers managed to escape the scene before they could be detained. The rescued individuals are now in safe custody while investigations continue to identify those responsible and prevent further trafficking attempts.
Residents in Teknaf welcomed the quick action, saying operations like this give some protection to communities that often fall victim to trafficking networks along the coast. Several residents said poverty, insecurity and lack of opportunities allow criminal groups to operate with greater influence.
The Coast Guard said joint operations will continue across the coastal region to prevent human trafficking and other cross border crimes.
