Today, the National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar released a statement to mark the 7th anniversary of the brutal crackdown on the Rohingya people in 2017. Reflecting on the tragedy, the NUG honored the memory of those who suffered and renewed its commitment to bringing justice to all ethnic communities in Myanmar.
The statement highlighted the decades of oppression that have plagued Myanmar, driven by fascist ideologies and a military regime that has systematically discriminated against ethnic and religious minorities, including the Rohingya. The NUG acknowledged that these policies have caused immense suffering and deep divisions within the country.
In its message, the NUG reaffirmed its dedication to the ongoing “Spring Revolution,” which aims to dismantle the military dictatorship and establish a genuine federal democracy in Myanmar. The NUG emphasized that this revolution is not just about political change; it’s about ending the long-standing injustices and discrimination that have harmed the people of Myanmar for far too long.
The NUG also paid tribute to the Rohingya people, recognizing their courage and resilience as they continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with other ethnic groups in the fight for a better future. The government expressed concern over the current situation, noting that the military, now weakened, is resorting to desperate tactics, including forcibly recruiting soldiers from vulnerable populations like the Rohingya. They also condemned the military’s use of civilians as human shields and its attempts to sow discord by spreading false information.
Looking ahead, the NUG pledged to pursue justice for the atrocities once the revolution is successful and a new government is in place. The goal, they said, is to build a Myanmar where justice and fairness are the norm, and where all people, regardless of their background, can unite and work together for a better future.
