Since June 2019, Myanmar’s Rakhine and Chin state has been under internet blockade which is home to about a million people.
A prominent Myanmar poet and activist, Maung Saung Kha, was alleged of putting up a protest banner saying “Is the internet being shut down to hide war crimes and killing people?”. Myanmar police filed a case under Peaceful Assembly Law, which outlaws unauthorised assemblies and can carry a maximum three-month prison sentence, a fine or both.
According to the Reuter’s, the free-speech activist appeared in court yesterday. After the hearing, Maung Saung Kha told reporters, “People are in a difficult situation because the internet is being shut down and so activists are doing their duty and organising protests.”
His next hearing is due on July 14, according to Reuters.
