The Sian Doung bridge in Buthidaung inaugurated on May, 2018 is being guarded by BGP forces. Their job – – take tolls from Rohingya Muslims for using the bridge. Other communities e.g. the Rakhine Buddhists and the Hindus can use it for free.
Motorcycles and taxis has to pay between 500 to 1,000kyats for one journey. Sampans and fishing boats has to pay toll only for rowing under the bridge.
This form of institutionalised discrimination has always existed on a legal basis, and activists say the situation has gotten worse following the 2017 genocide.
