September 4, 2025, More than 300 Rohingya are preparing to cross the Naf River into Bangladesh from Ferenfaru village on the eastern bank in Arakan State, according to reliable sources cited by Jamuna TV.
Groups Gathering in Ferenfaru
On September 3, a group of 41 Rohingya, split into two smaller groups, reportedly left Buthidaung town and are now sheltering in four houses in Ferenfaru village. The day before, on September 2, nearly 200 others had already gathered in the same area, waiting for the chance to cross the river.
Payments Demanded for Passage
Sources suggest that while the Arakan Army (AA) is not directly blocking Rohingya from leaving, its members are allegedly demanding money to allow people to travel toward Bangladesh. Families say they feel compelled to pay, fearing both harassment and delays.
Perilous River Crossings
According to reports, boats typically approach the Bangladeshi side of the Naf River between 8 and 9 p.m., where they remain anchored overnight. Crossings are usually attempted at dawn if river and weather conditions permit. Upon reaching Bangladesh, local brokers reportedly assist new arrivals in reaching safe shelters.
A Community on the Move
The growing movement underscores the insecurity and uncertainty facing Rohingya communities in Arakan. With forced displacement, restrictions, and fear of persecution, many continue to risk dangerous journeys across the Naf River in search of safety in Bangladesh.
