At least 75 Rohingya refugees, including four children, arrived at a beach in Indonesia’s Aceh Province early Tuesday morning. However, Indonesian authorities have barred them from leaving the boat, pending intervention from international organizations, according to AFP reports.
Local government official Rizalihadi stated that the refugees’ boat reached the shore around 2 AM. Indonesian security forces, including the navy and local police, have prevented them from disembarking. The refugees remain on board as they await representatives from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
This latest group joins more than 260 Rohingya refugees who landed in Aceh earlier this month. The increasing number of Rohingya seeking safety in Indonesia has sparked mixed reactions, with some local communities expressing concerns over their arrival. Despite this, international organizations continue to urge the Indonesian government to uphold humanitarian principles and provide protection for the refugees.
The Rohingya, an ethnic minority escaping systematic starvation and persecution in Arakan, continue to undertake perilous sea journeys to flee oppression. Many also seek refuge from dire conditions in overcrowded refugee camps in Bangladesh. Facing the risk of death at sea, they endure dangerous voyages in search of safety.
With the growing number of arrivals, Indonesia has called for international assistance to manage the crisis. According to UN reports, over 2,300 Rohingya refugees reached Indonesia in 2023, while nearly 570 people died or went missing at sea.
The Indonesian government now faces mounting pressure to balance humanitarian concerns with local resistance, as refugee arrivals continue.
