June 27, 2024- Amid intensified fighting in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, fresh concerns have arisen in Bangladesh regarding a possible new influx of Rohingya refugees. The conflict has forced thousands of Rohingya to flee their homes once again, with many reportedly waiting in boats on the Naf River, seeking entry into Bangladesh.
Local representatives in Teknaf Upazila, Cox’s Bazar, reported hearing relentless gunfire and explosions from Rakhine’s Kawar Beel and Perangpuru regions. The sounds, which began on Tuesday evening and continued until Wednesday morning, have created a tense atmosphere among the local population. Residents also reported sightings of fighter jets and helicopters firing weapons.
Mohammad Sharif, a member of the Sabrang Union Council, described the explosions as the loudest yet, causing sleepless nights for the border community. The Chairman of Sabrang Union Parishad, Noor Hossain, urged locals to remain vigilant after seeing Rohingya boats cross the Naf River via the Khayenkhali canal, likely fleeing the violence in Maungdaw town.
Authorities in Bangladesh have heightened security measures in response to the situation. Teknaf Municipality’s Mayor, Mojibur Rahman, confirmed that border authorities are on high alert to prevent any incursions. Md. Adnan Chowdhury, the Executive Officer of Teknaf Upazila, announced the strengthening of border patrols in response to the escalating conflict across the border.
The ongoing conflict in Rakhine, driven by clashes between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army, has led to significant civilian displacement. The United Nations has reported that approximately 45,000 Rohingya have fled the recent fighting, adding to the over one million Rohingya refugees already residing in Bangladesh since the military crackdown in 2017.
Asaduzzaman Khan, the Home Minister of Bangladesh, highlighted the recent seizure of smuggled arms and ammunition from Myanmar, indicating a rise in security threats. The situation remains precarious as both the local population and authorities brace for the potential arrival of more refugees.
