On Thursday (23 February) Rohingya community leader Mohammad Salim died under treatment in Chottagong Medical College Hospital after being seriously injured on Wednesday in an attack by miscreants at Ukhiya Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar.
It is learnt that at 10:30 pm on Wednesday night, Mohammad Salim was seriously injured in the C-2 block of Kutupalong Rohingya camp No. 5 in Ukhiya.
OC Sheikh Muhammad Ali of Ukhia Police Station confirmed that he died there in the morning, and also said that the injured were rescued and admitted to the MSF hospital adjacent to the Kutupalong shelter camp. At that time, the on duty doctor at the hospital sent him to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital. Later, when his physical condition deteriorated, he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
APBN Police Captain Harunur Rashid said that on Wednesday night, Mohammad Salim was supervising the work of the voluntary guards at the C-2 Block of the Kutupalong camp-5 at the field level. At one point of conversation with the workers there, an unidentified group of 10/15 masked miscreants attacked them. The miscreant targeted Salim and shot him. When a team of APBN reached the spot on receiving information, the attackers fled.
The APBN official also said, “Initially, the police thought that this attack had taken place with the aim of dominating the Rohingya camp. The real reason will be known after the investigation of the incident. APBN is conducting an operation to identify and arrest those involved in the incident.”
The shootings amidst the camp created desperation and panic among the refugees.
