On Saturday (25 February) around 5 am, Rohingya refugees of camp-20 hill area found a dead body near Chara (stream) in Ukhiya Rohingya camp. Family members and law enforcement agencies believe that members of separatist group Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) killed him.

The deceased has been identified as  Maulvi Samsu Alam (38) son of late, Mia Chan of Kutupalong Camp-17 Block-C, Sub block-H in Ukhiya Upazila.

According to sources, Maulvi Samsu Alam came out of his house to offer Fajr prayers and did not return after the prayer.  Later, people saw a dead body lying on the side of the hill and gathered there.  The Rohingyas gathered on the spot identified it as Maulvi Samsu.

Camp-17 and 20 are close.  The Rohingyas believe that while he was going to offer prayers, he was picked up beaten and suffocated to death near the hilly area at the end of Camp 20.  After killing him, they left.

Additional DIG Sayed Harun Rashid, 14-APBN commander said, “I learned from the investigation that the deceased Samsu and his family members were associated with a controversial ARSA group.  And so, he may have been killed following their internal conflict.”

APBN official also said that operation to find out by whom the incident took place is underway.

Police sent the body to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
