On Tuesday, Police have recovered a dead body near pillar no. 39 of the border in Baishfari area, Naikhongchhari Ghumdhum border, Bandarban, Chittagong.
Chief of the Ghumdhum Police Station Outpost, Sub Inspector Emon Chowdhury stated that, the man died in a landmine explosion near the border. According to him, the dead man is believed to be a Rohingya refugee. The body was sent to Bandarban Sadar Hospital morgue for postmortem.
“The man lost his legs in the blast. The type of his injuries suggested he was killed in a landmine blast while crossing the border into Myanmar,” the Sub Inspector stated.
To all intents and purposes, Myanmar’s security forces have reportedly planted internationally banned antipersonnel landmines along its border with Bangladesh to prevent Rohingyas to go back to their homeland from refugee camps in Bangladesh. Heretofore, many of them died in landmine blasts while crossing the border into Bangladesh.
Amnesty International has blamed the Myanmar Army for planting the landmines, a claim the Myanmar authorities have denied.
