November 24, 2024: A 35-year-old Rohingya laborer was fatally shot by members of the Arakan Army (AA) while sewing fishing nets near the Hairpara shore in Maungdaw Downtown, Arakan State. The victim was reportedly targeted without provocation, according to local witnesses.
The man, who was trying to earn a living to support his family, became the latest victim in what residents describe as a growing pattern of violence against the Rohingya community. “He was just working to feed his family,” said a witness. “There was no reason for this attack.”
The Arakan Army, an ethnic insurgent group in Myanmar, has faced mounting accusations of targeting the Rohingya population in the region. In recent months, reports have emerged of abductions and killings, including the deaths of several young and educated members of the community.
The Rohingya, already one of the world’s most persecuted minorities, are living in heightened fear and insecurity due to these escalating attacks. Community leaders and activists are calling for urgent intervention from the international community to halt the violence.
“The Arakan Army must be held accountable for these atrocities,” a local resident urged. “The world needs to act to protect innocent lives before it’s too late.”
Human rights organizations and global leaders are being called upon to pressure Myanmar’s authorities and hold the Arakan Army responsible for their actions. The Rohingya community, many of whom are already displaced or living in dire conditions, remains vulnerable in the face of ongoing violence.
