Cox’s Bazar, June 27, 2024 Unidentified attackers fatally stabbed a Rohingya man, Md. Salek, 35, at the Balukhali refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya upazila late Thursday night. Around 11 p.m. at camp number 8, three to four individuals disguised in burqas ambushed Salek.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shamim Hossain of the Ukhiya police station reported that Salek sustained multiple injuries from sharp weapons on his head and body. Despite immediate efforts to rush him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries en route.
According to local sources, the attackers targeted Salek, a resident of the D-76 block of the camp, in an attempt to establish dominance among rival armed groups active in the area. However, the exact motive behind the murder remains unclear as investigations continue.
The authorities are on high alert and have increased security measures within the camp to prevent further violence. The incident highlights ongoing tensions and security challenges within the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, which house hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing persecution from Myanmar.
Local law enforcement is urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities as they work to apprehend those responsible for this brutal attack.
