Cox’s Bazar, March 9, 2025
A Rohingya refugee was killed, and several others were injured as violence erupted between two armed groups—the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO) and the Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA)—in the refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar.
Gunfight Between RSO and ARA
The clashes began in the early hours of March 7, around 12:30 AM, when ARA members launched an attack on RSO in Camp 10, Balukhali 1.
The assault left two RSO members severely injured—one shot in the hand and another in the leg.
In retaliation, on March 8, RSO fighters gathered in Block H42 of Camp 10 and launched a counterattack on ARA members in Camp 8E, triggering a violent exchange of gunfire between the two groups.
Disabled Rohingya Refugee Caught in the Crossfire
During the gunfight in Camp 8E, Mohammad Rofique (32), a disabled Rohingya refugee from Block B21, was hit by a stray bullet.
He was immediately taken to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) hospital in Camp 9, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
In addition to Rofique’s tragic death, several members from both RSO and ARA sustained injuries and were admitted to local hospitals for treatment.
Police Intervention and Arrests
The Armed Police Battalion (APBn) responded to the violence, arresting two ARA members from Camp 8E during the clashes.
However, tensions remain high in the area, with residents fearing further escalations.
Rising Insecurity in the Camps
Eyewitnesses report that ordinary Rohingya refugees are increasingly caught in the crossfire of armed clashes between rival groups.
Human rights organizations have raised concerns about worsening security in the camps, with armed groups forcing refugees to participate in violent activities.
The deteriorating situation in the Rohingya refugee camps underscores the urgent need for stronger security measures to protect innocent civilians and prevent further bloodshed.
