On Sunday Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen said that Bangladesh is optimistic about starting the repatriation of Rohingyas by the end of this year. He said this while talking to reporters after the meeting of the National Task Force on Rohingya issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on yesterday.
On August 25, 2022 it will be 5 years since Rohingya fled into Bangladesh. Rohingya repatriation could not be started in the last 5 years.
The Foreign Secretary said, “We hope to start repatriation by the end of this year. We are trying to do it for our own sake because they are becoming a burden for us.”
In the meeting, Masud bin Momen said, “United Nations organizations are implementing important projects in the villages of Rakhine. Besides, China, Japan and India are also working to improve the situation there.”
He said, “Bangladesh government has asked the United Nations organizations for information, pictures and videos of the implementation of the project so that it can be used to build the confidence of the Rohingya.”
In today’s meeting, the task force adopted two policies. One is skill development and capacity building that Rohingyas can use after they return to Myanmar and the other is recruiting volunteers from Rohingya and host communities,” he said.
The meeting was attended by the United Nations Resident Coordinator, United Nations Refugee Agency, International Organization for Migration, United Nations Food Programme, UNICEF, United Nations Population Fund and representatives of various UN organizations including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Disaster Management, Ministry of Home Affairs.
