A Rohingya teenager was killed, and two others were severely injured by a mortar shell fired from Myanmar while crab fishing in the Naf River near Jaliar Island, Teknaf. The incident occurred on Sunday evening and has further escalated tensions in the region.
The deceased, Mohammad Zubair, 18, hailed from the Leda Rohingya camp in Teknaf. The injured, Mohammad Jaber and Mohammad Shukkur, are from Camps 24 and 27, respectively.
Mohammad Osman Gani, the officer-in-charge of the Teknaf model police station, reported that the Arakan Army’s mortar shell exploded nearby while the three youths were crab fishing. Zubair succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital initially treated the injured before transferring them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced care.
Authorities are investigating the incident to determine if the youths were crossing from Myanmar when the attack occurred. The Rohingya community in the region has expressed deep concern over the increasing violence spilling over from Myanmar. This incident adds to the growing list of cross-border attacks causing casualties and fear among Rohingya refugees and local residents.
Bangladesh has previously expressed alarm and lodged strong protests with Myanmar over similar incidents. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has tightened vigilance along the Naf River to prevent further cross-border violence and unauthorized entry.
The Rohingya population, caught in the crossfire between Myanmar’s military forces and insurgent groups like the Arakan Army, is suffering from ongoing instability and violence, as this tragic event highlights.
