At just 11 years old, Asma Bibi is a beacon of hope for her community. A student at the Youths for Rohingya Development (YRD) community-led high school in Camp 15, she dreams of becoming a doctor to provide compassionate care to the women in her community, addressing a gap that has long been overlooked.

Asma was born in Thin Ga Net village in Buthidaung Township, Rakhine State, Myanmar, into a well-respected family. Her father, a dedicated government village Head Assistant, served for decades, spearheading development projects like improving roads and ensuring better infrastructure for villagers. His commitment to public welfare left a lasting legacy in their community.

Growing up in Myanmar, Asma was troubled by the lack of female doctors in her community. Women often felt uncomfortable seeking treatment from male doctors, but with few options available, they had little choice. This, coupled with the limited opportunities for women in higher education, planted a seed of determination in her young mind.

When she arrived in Bangladesh, Asma’s world changed. She witnessed women thriving in various professions—doctors, engineers, soldiers, police officers, and even drivers. This revelation inspired her deeply, showing her that given the opportunity, girls can achieve anything. With this newfound awareness, Asma set her sights on becoming a doctor, determined to make a difference for the women in her community who might otherwise hesitate to seek medical care.

“I feel very lucky because my parents are incredibly supportive,” Asma shared, her face lighting up with a smile. “They always encourage me to focus on my studies and have faith in my dream of becoming a doctor. Their constant motivation helps me stay determined.”

With her parents’ unwavering support and her own determination, Asma Bibi is working tirelessly toward her goal. Her story is not just about her aspirations; it is a symbol of hope for her entire community. One day, Asma envisions herself wearing a white coat and holding a stethoscope, bringing healing and hope to those in need, and inspiring other girls to pursue their dreams.
