On Wednesday (19 October) night a Rohingya youth, his mother, including wife and children tried to commit suicide lying on the road in front of UNHCR sub office in Cox’s Bazar for the repeated deprivation of legal justice in Kutupalong registered refugee camp.
The patrolling police, and guard of UNHCR sub office manage to convince the youth and his family members after trying half an hour. Later on the family members have been sent to Kutupalong camp.
The youth alleged that the camp in-charge and the police have been harassing them regularly due to family disputes. He also claimed that the family was deprived of the benefits to which registered refugees are entitled. He said that despite repeated requests, the authorities did not take any action.
“Not only is Osman’s family is the victim of such harassment but also majority of refugees in registered camps are facing untold physical and mental torture by law enforcement agencies. Other hand concerned authorities from United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) remain silent to what is going in registered camps, despite being reported. So refugees like Osman are compelled to commit suicide before UNHCR office,” a refugee from Kutupalong registered camp told under anonymity.
