A Rohingya youth named Mohammad Ayas, estimated to be around 25 years old, has died in a mine explosion at the Naf River border in Cox’s Bazar. The incident occurred on Tuesday (July 2) afternoon, with Ayas succumbing to his injuries en route to the hospital.

Dr. Md. Ashiqur Rahman, the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, confirmed the incident by stating that an unidentified individual brought the injured man to the hospital’s emergency department, reporting his injuries from a mine explosion at the border. Later, the hospital confirmed that the injured individual was a Rohingya. The explosion completely severed his right ankle, and the hospital declared him dead before he arrived.

Dr. Ashiqur Rahman mentioned that the unidentified individual who brought Ayas to the hospital left immediately after. The individual informed the hospital staff that a mine explosion on the Myanmar side of the Naf River border near Teknaf had injured Mohammad Ayas.

There is no information yet on whether the deceased was residing in a Rohingya camp in Bangladesh or was a Rohingya citizen living in Myanmar. The morgue of Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital is holding the body for an autopsy.
