Sri Lankan Navy has rescued 104 Rohingya women, men and children from a trawler floating in the Indian Ocean.
They were rescued off the northern coast of the country on Sunday night (December 18) local time.
Sri Lankan Navy spokesman Gayan Wickramasuriya confirmed the matter. Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported this information.
He said that these rescued Rohingyas have been handed over to the police. They will be produced in court later.
The navy official told reporters that the trawler was seen floating about 7 kilometers (3.5 nautical miles) off Sri Lanka’s northern coast. Its engine was broken.
During the preliminary investigation, the people of the boat said that it had sailed from the Arakan coast of Myanmar to Indonesia. The engine broke down midway.
According to the Navy’s statement, the Rohingyas were floating in the sea after the engine of the trawler broke down. They were on their way to Indonesia from Myanmar.
It said there were 39 women, 23 children and 80 adults in the floating trawler. All of them fell ill. After the rescue, these Rohingya were taken to the hospital.
