On Tuesday (November 8) UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis, said that it is becoming increasingly difficult to put the Rohingya issue on the global agenda. However, the UN is trying to keep the matter alive.
She said these things at the ‘Diplomatic Correspondents Association Bangladesh (DCAB) Talk’ organized by DCAB at the National Press Club in Dhaka. At the event, the UN resident coordinator said that many global problems are constantly coming to the fore. After the Afghanistan issue, the Ukraine issue comes to the fore.
Lewis suggested a political solution to the Rohingya issue. She said that the Rohingyas must return to Myanmar and it must be safe and dignified. The UN is working with Myanmar for the safe repatriation of Rohingyas. The United Nation will continue to cooperate in this regard.
The Resident Coordinator expressed gratitude to Bangladesh for providing shelter to the Rohingyas. And said that raising funds for the Rohingya is now challenging due to the global situation.
“Fund raising for the Rohingya is very challenging. Their food security is challenging. That is where we focus,” Lewis added.
In response to a question about the financing of the Rohingyas, he said that only 6 to 7 percent of the funds given by the donors for the Rohingyas are spent on the management of the local offices of the United Nation. The rest of the money is spent on the Rohingyas. What this money is spent on for the Rohingyas was not made clear.
