The 3rd June Rohingya Genocide Commemoration Day was solemnly observed at The Boulevard Reserve beside Lakemba station. The event, held from 3 to 5 PM, saw the participation of numerous members of the Rohingya community and supporters from various other communities, all united in remembrance and advocacy.
The commemoration aimed to raise awareness about the ongoing plight of the Rohingya people, who have endured severe persecution and violence in Myanmar. Since the military crackdown in 2017, the Rohingya have faced atrocities such as mass killings, sexual violence, and forced displacement. Many have sought refuge in neighboring Bangladesh, where about one million people live in challenging conditions in refugee camps.
Despite international pressure and legal actions, such as Gambia’s case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the situation remains dire. The ICJ mandated Myanmar to take provisional measures to protect the Rohingya, but reports of ongoing abuses continue.
The Sydney event highlighted global solidarity with the Rohingya and the ongoing demand for justice and accountability. Attendees from diverse backgrounds underscored the universal demand for human rights and the end of genocidal practices. The gathering served as a powerful reminder of the international community’s role in advocating for the rights and safety of the Rohingya people.
