In June 2012, A group of Rakhine extremist and anti- Rohingya Nationalist rapidly spread propaganda on the ground and through the social media, alleging that a Rakhine woman was gang-raped and murdered by some Rohingya. The pretext of such allegation was to instigate a mass riot and to destroy and loot Rohingya properties and murder them indiscriminately. According to many people, it was a design of the Myanmar Military.
To capitalize on their initial hate propaganda, extremist Rakhine of Taunggo killed ten Myanmar Muslim who are not even Rohingyas. The rest is history. Rohingya villages were rendered to Internal Displaced Person (IDPs) and as of now more than 124,000 Rohingyas live in the IDP camps.
Therefore, the Rohingyas observe 3rd June as a Rohingya Genocide day mostly in the cyber world. The idea was initially originated in the Rohingya camps in Bangladesh.
According to a refugee from No-man (Zero points) area who has fled the Myanmar military atrocities in 2017 said,”We can never forget 3rd of June. Because from that day on the military and the government of our country has initiated an extreme level of persecution against us.” Yet another refugee from the camp said, “3rd June is a memorial day for Myanmar Muslim. So we, Rohingyas should show our solidarity with them but we cannot mark as Rohingya Genocide day.”
Conclusively, most of the Rohingya Activists around the world, in the refugee camps and inside Myanmar agrees it is a black day for the Rohingyas, as well as for the Burmese Muslims.
It is fascinating how the Myanmar government institution uses propaganda and incorporates hate speech and Islamophobia to divide and create hatred among its own people.
