Kutupalong, 17 August 2025 — The body of an 18-year-old Tom Tom driver, Nurul Afsar, was discovered in the Ghumdum area near Yahaya Garden in Kutupalong Camp, sending shockwaves through the refugee community.
Nurul, the son of Zafar Alam and Hazara Khatun, lived in Camp-1 East, Block G-17. He went missing on Saturday while working with his Tom Tom. Known as a hardworking youth, Nurul supported his family under extremely difficult conditions.
According to initial reports, he was brutally tortured and killed with a knife in what appears to be a violent attack by unknown criminals. His devastated parents have urged authorities to find the attackers and bring them to justice.
Neighbors suggested that kidnappers may have entered his Tom Tom with the intention of abducting passengers. When Nurul recognized them, he was allegedly taken to Yahaya Garden and murdered.
This killing highlights the continuing insecurity faced by Rohingya refugees in the camps, where violence, extortion, and lawlessness have left residents vulnerable. Community members and rights advocates are calling on authorities and humanitarian actors to take urgent steps to ensure safety and prevent further tragedies.
