Police in Ukhiya have rescued two kidnapped traders and arrested two suspects after a swift operation in the remote hill areas near Inani. The rescue took place within ninety minutes of a call to the National Emergency Service nine nine nine on the evening of November 25.
The rescued men are Saiful Islam, twenty eight, and Nurul Hossain, forty two. Police said the arrested suspects are Nurul Hakim, twenty five, and Syed Noor, forty, both reported to be Rohingya nationals from Myanmar.
Inspector Anwar Sattar, Media and Public Relations Officer of nine nine nine, said the incident began when a resident from Ward Eight of Chapatkhali in Jalia Palong reported that two neighbours had been taken away by armed men. The caller said the kidnappers had confined the victims in an isolated hill area near Inani and were demanding six lakh taka in ransom.
Constable Ranjit Debnath received the call and immediately informed Ukhiya Police Station. A patrol team from the Inani Police Outpost moved toward the location despite difficult terrain and limited visibility after dark.
Police traced the two traders about three kilometres from the abduction point and rescued them safely at around eight in the evening. Officers said the kidnappers fled when they saw police lights approaching. Later, based on descriptions provided by the victims, two suspects were located and taken into custody.
Inspector Sattar said the rescued men are safe and unharmed. He said eyewitnesses identified the suspects, who have now been sent to jail under court order.
The incident has alarmed residents of Ukhiya’s hill zones, where isolation and limited security create opportunities for criminal groups. Police said the investigation is continuing and that additional persons may have been involved.
Local residents said they hope the quick action taken by police will help prevent further incidents in areas close to the Bangladesh and Myanmar border.
