Two Rohingya girls have died after being detained by the Arakan Army in Buthidaung Township, according to local sources.
Residents said the incident began on February 20, 2026, in Oo Hla Phay village, where members of the Arakan Army reportedly took 11 Rohingya girls from the village and brought them to an Arakan Army camp.
Community sources stated that two of the detained girls later died inside the camp, while nine others remain in custody.
The deceased were identified as Fatema, 17, daughter of Nur Alom, and Nur Begum, 18, daughter of Hal Miya.
Local residents alleged that the two girls may have died due to torture and sexual violence inside the camp. However, there has been no independent confirmation of the exact cause of death, and no official statement has been released regarding the incident.
“Our children are not safe anymore. We don’t know why they took the girls, and now two of them are dead,” one Rohingya villager said.
Another resident described growing fear among families. “Every night we worry that our daughters could be taken next. There is no protection for us,” the person said.
A Rohingya elder expressed concern for the remaining nine girls who are still detained. “We are afraid something may happen to them too,” he said.
The situation in Buthidaung remains tense, with families calling for clarity regarding the incident and the immediate release and protection of the remaining girls.
There has been no public response from the Arakan Army regarding the arrests or the reported deaths.
