A sudden visit by high ranking officials from the District Administrator’s office and the La Wa Ka to the the zero point at Taung Pyo has once again raised tensions in the already volatile region.
Thousands of Rohingya refugees are currently stranded in the no man’s zone in the Taung Pyo area. Earlier this year, security forces have often opened fire and thrown brickbats in several occasions at the stranded Rohingyas and ordered them to leave the zero point and go to Bangladesh territory. The area is under heavy surveillance with cc cameras placed on barbed wire fences with heavily armed Myanmar forces maintaining aggressive positions leading to fears they might be planning an offensive against the defenseless refugees.
