Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia has declared that they are preparing a strategic paper to determine a favourable role where Malaysia will land a helping hand for Rohingya refugees.
Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said, “Malaysia is consistent in ensuring that the repatriation of Rohingya refugees is done in a voluntary, safe and dignified manner.
As a country, we always provide assistance to the Rohingya, whether they are in Cox’s Bazar, Myanmar or in our country.”
Since the early 1990s, many Rohingyas fled from Myanmar and started a new life in refugee settlements at Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Some Rohingya have also come to Malaysia.
In response to the question of whether the government has to propose to ASEAN to re-evaluate its principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of member nations, which is seen as a barrier to the concrete settlement of the Rohingya issue the Foreign Minister said ASEAN had taken the constructive engagement approach with Myanmar to find a solution to the issue.
Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah has recently made his three-day working visit to Bangladesh from 6th July 2019 and has visited the Rohingya camp too. This was his first trip to the country since assuming the post last year.
