A young woman remains in critical condition after suffering a violent attack allegedly carried out by her husband this afternoon in Block E-6 of Lambasia Camp-1E. The incident has left many in the Rohingya refugee community shaken and deeply concerned about rising domestic violence in the camps.
The victim, 25-year-old Yeasmin Ara, was seriously injured around 3:30 p.m. when her husband, Nur Azim (28), reportedly attacked her with a sharp object following a dispute. Community members rushed to help after hearing her screams, finding her unconscious with wounds to her hands, legs, and face.
Local volunteers quickly transported Yeasmin to the MSF hospital in Kutupalong for emergency care. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transferred to Chittagong for further treatment. As of the latest reports, her condition remains critical.
According to neighbors and local sources, Nur Azim had returned to the camp just 20 days ago after being imprisoned in Myanmar for two years. Initially, the family—including their two children—was living quietly in the camp. However, tensions reportedly escalated over personal issues, and the situation turned violent.
After the attack, Nur Azim fled the scene and is currently in hiding. Community members attempted to apprehend him but were unsuccessful. His whereabouts remain unknown.
Block E-6 is overseen by Head Majhi Ali Hossain and Sub-Majhi Esak. Camp authorities and Majhis are cooperating with relevant agencies to ensure the safety of the victim’s children and to locate the suspect.
This tragic incident has sparked renewed conversations around the urgent need for stronger protection mechanisms for women and families in refugee camps. Community leaders and residents are calling for increased awareness, intervention, and justice.
“Violence has no place in our homes or our camps,” said one local elder. “We must act before another life is lost.”
