Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar – January 24, 2025
In a successful operation yesterday morning, police rescued 15 individuals held for ransom in the Baharchhara Kachhapia Gohin Hills area of Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. The rescue effort, conducted at 10 a.m., also led to the arrest of two kidnappers.
According to Mohammad Ghiyas Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, the Gohin Hills had been used as a hideout by smugglers to detain individuals gathered from various areas for illegal trafficking to Malaysia. The kidnappers had demanded ransom from the hostages’ families, resorting to physical abuse if payments were not made.
Among those rescued were 10 Rohingya refugees and 5 Bangladeshi nationals. The arrested suspects, identified as Harun (25) and Nur Mohammad (19), are both sons of Nur Kobir from the Kachpia area of Baharchhara Union in Teknaf.
The hostages were discovered atop a hill in Madhyam Kachhapia, Ward No. 8, Teknaf. Police confirmed that immediate legal action is being taken against the arrested individuals.
This operation highlights the ongoing challenges of human trafficking and ransom crimes in the region, as well as the critical need for continued vigilance by authorities to protect vulnerable communities.
