On 18 September 2022 the Myanmar military arrested one Abdul Shukkur (18), inhabitant of Taung Ywa village Buthidaung while he was travelling to Thailand through a broker.
The arrest was made when the military conducted a joint inspection near Maikone Joint Checkpoint at Ann township.
Father of detainee from Buthidaung said, “One Jaber from our village lives in Thailand who induced my son Shukkur to go and work in Thailand. Ultimately Jaber hired a broker and paid 70 lakh kyats in order to take my son to Thailand through landline. When my son reached near Maikone Joint Checkpoint, the broker left him alone and let him go on foot. As a result my son has been held in the hand of military.”
Due to military and Arakan Army tension and job scarcity in Rakhine state, many Rohingya youths are being trafficked to Thailand and Malaysia. Most of whom are left abandon by the traffickers in the middle of the road.
