Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar — June 2, 2025 — A 22-year-old Rohingya youth tragically lost his life and a child was injured early Monday when a mud wall collapsed on their shelter in Camp 2E, one of the most densely populated sections of the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya upazila.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Ayas, son of Abul Fayez, a resident of Block D-3 East. The injured child, Kamal Uddin (12), is the son of Jamal Uddin, who lives in the same area.
The incident took place in the pre-dawn hours amid heavy rainfall, which likely caused the unstable wall of the earthen shelter to give way.
“We heard a loud crash and rushed out. Both of them were under the collapsed wall,” said a neighbor who helped in the rescue.
Camp residents quickly pulled the two from the rubble and rushed them to the BDRCS Primary Health Care Centre inside the camp. Due to the severity of his injuries, Ayas was later referred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where he passed away while undergoing treatment.
Monsoon Season Brings Renewed Dangers
Every year, the monsoon rains turn fragile camp shelters into death traps. Built with mud, bamboo, and tarpaulin, most structures are not equipped to withstand severe weather—leaving families exposed to deadly risks.
“We have no choice but to live in houses made of mud and bamboo. Every rain brings fear,” said a youth from Camp-2E.
Local leaders and humanitarian workers warn that as rains intensify, more such accidents are likely, unless urgent measures are taken to reinforce housing structures and relocate at-risk families.
A Call for Urgent Action
Community volunteers are urging:
- Immediate assessments of vulnerable shelters,
- Reinforcement of high-risk zones,
- And the relocation of families living near slopes or unstable structures.
“Mohammad Ayas didn’t die in a war. He died because his shelter couldn’t hold,” said a camp elder. “This is not fate—it’s neglect.”
As the monsoon season continues, Rohingya families brace for more rain, more damage—and more loss.
