At least 153 Rohingya are among 1,476 Myanmar nationals recently returned from Malaysia and have been separated from other returnees for questioning, according to a report by Khin Tin Media.
The 1,476 people arrived at the Thanlyin naval base near Yangon on October 4 after being returned from Malaysia aboard Myanmar military vessels. They had been held in immigration detention in Malaysia before their return.
Khin Tin Media reported that authorities separated 153 Rohingya from Arakan State and 152 Rakhine people from the other returnees after their arrival.
According to the report, the 305 people are being held at locations in Hlaing Tharyar Township and at the Thanlyin naval base while authorities question them.
The report said military intelligence, police intelligence and Special Branch personnel were involved in the questioning.
The Rakhine returnees were reportedly being questioned about how they travelled to Malaysia and whether they had links to the Arakan Army. The Rohingya were being questioned about how they left Myanmar and travelled to Malaysia, according to Khin Tin Media.
The report also said the Rohingya could face further action under Myanmar’s immigration laws after the questioning and could eventually be sent back to Arakan State.
Rohingya Khobor could not independently verify the reported number of Rohingya returnees, their current places of detention or the details of the questioning.
Public reporting on the return operation has confirmed that 1,476 Myanmar nationals arrived in Myanmar from Malaysia on October 4, but initial reports did not identify the ethnic backgrounds of the returnees.
Relatives of some returnees have also reportedly been waiting for information about their family members after their arrival.
The return comes amid concerns over the safety of people being sent back to Myanmar, where conflict continues in several parts of the country.
