Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing a diplomatic solution to the Rohingya crisis, saying it will continue working with the international community to support the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh is maintaining diplomatic engagement with the United Nations, regional partners, foreign governments, and international organizations to help create conditions for sustainable Rohingya repatriation.
He said the only long-term solution to the crisis is the return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar’s Rakhine State in safety, dignity, and with their rights protected.
The Prime Minister said Bangladesh continues to keep the Rohingya issue on the international agenda while supporting humanitarian assistance for the more than one million Rohingya refugees living in camps in Cox’s Bazar.
He also noted that senior officials from UNHCR, UN Women, and the World Food Programme have visited the refugee camps since the current government took office to discuss humanitarian assistance and protection for Rohingya refugees.
Referring to the recent visit of Türkiye’s Foreign Minister to Bangladesh, including the Rohingya camps, Tarique Rahman expressed hope that it would help strengthen international humanitarian support for the refugee response.
The Prime Minister said Bangladesh also continues to support international accountability efforts, including The Gambia’s case against Myanmar before the International Court of Justice.
According to him, Bangladesh remains engaged with Myanmar’s authorities and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate future repatriation while continuing work on identity verification, confidence-building measures, and third-country resettlement initiatives.
He said progress toward repatriation depends on improvements in the security situation in Rakhine State, stronger international engagement, and Myanmar’s willingness to create conditions for the voluntary return of Rohingya refugees. He also stressed the importance of dialogue between the Myanmar authorities and the Arakan Army to help restore peace and stability in Rakhine.
As the host country, Bangladesh is also continuing efforts to improve security in the refugee camps, support host communities, and coordinate humanitarian assistance through government agencies, the United Nations, and humanitarian partners.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that Bangladesh will continue working toward a durable solution that enables Rohingya refugees to return safely, voluntarily, and with dignity to their homeland in Myanmar.
