UKHIYA, Cox’s Bazar, 16 August 2026: A Bangladeshi man was shot and injured near Rohingya refugee Camp 14 in Ukhiya following a dispute involving unpaid shop debts and land, according to police and local reports.
The shooting occurred after Friday prayers on 14 August in the C/02 Block area of Camp 14.
The injured man was identified as 30-year-old Obaidul Haque Lalu, a resident of Hakimpara in Palongkhali Union.
Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman said preliminary information indicated that a man identified as Yunus arrived with several others following a dispute over unpaid shop debts and land and that gunfire was subsequently reported.
Lalu was struck in the leg.
An eyewitness told local media that two shots were fired during the confrontation, with one hitting Lalu.
He was initially taken to an MSF health facility in Camp 14 and later referred for further treatment. Subsequent local reporting said he was transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced care.
Alleged RSO Link Not Confirmed
Some local residents and media reports described Yunus as a member of the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO), an armed Rohingya group active in the refugee camps.
However, police have not publicly confirmed that affiliation, and Rohingya Khobor could not independently verify the claim.
The allegation should therefore not be treated as an established armed-group connection at this stage.
Police said they were investigating the incident and would take legal action based on the findings.
No publicly confirmed information was immediately available on whether a case had been filed or whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the shooting.
The incident has raised renewed concern over the circulation of firearms and violence around the refugee camps, as well as tensions between camp residents and surrounding host communities.
Rohingya Khobor is monitoring the investigation, including the condition of the injured man and whether police establish any connection between the suspect and an organised armed group.
