Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh — A research-policy dialogue examining justice, recognition and international responses to the Rohingya genocide is scheduled to take place in Cox’s Bazar on September 27.
The seminar, titled “Genocide Diplomacy and the Rohingya: Justice, Recognition and the Politics of International Response,” will be held at the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner’s Conference Room.
Professor Imtiaz Ahmed, a researcher on Rohingya affairs and retired professor at the University of Dhaka, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.
The event will also include the launch of the open-access edited volume Politics of Denial and Non-Recognition of Genocide: The Case of the Rohingya, published by Palgrave Macmillan. The book is edited by Professor Nasir Uddin, Professor Palash Kamruzzaman and Dr Bayes Ahmed.
The volume examines the Rohingya genocide through the interconnected questions of violence, denial, identity, justice and international recognition. It emerged from a wider research project investigating how state sovereignty, geopolitical interests and media narratives influence whether genocides are recognised or denied.
The project also considers the consequences of non-recognition for survivors, refugees and their descendants. Its stated objectives include identifying inconsistencies in international responses to mass atrocities and developing recommendations for governments, international organisations and civil society.
The Refugee and Migration Lab is organising the event in collaboration with University College London, the University of Chittagong, the University of Dhaka and the University of South Wales. The research project is funded by the British Academy.
The dialogue comes as the Rohingya continue to seek justice and accountability nine years after Myanmar’s military launched its 2017 campaign of mass violence. International legal proceedings remain underway, but Rohingya survivors still face statelessness, prolonged displacement and uncertainty over their future.
