3 – Burma – General Elections (November 8, 2020)

For the first time in 60 years, general elections held by a democratically elected civilian government were held in Burma. This is another important step in the democratic construction of this country.

France, like its partners in the European Union, encourages all Parties to accept the outcome of these elections and to engage around the civilian government that will be born. Efforts in good governance and democratic reforms will need to continue to enable the country’s sustainable economic and social development and to guarantee the political and economic rights of all, including the Rohingya.

We hope that the electoral process will be completed in constituencies where the vote has not been held and that ethnic and religious minorities will be able to play their full part.

As a development partner of ASEAN, France will continue to strongly support the strengthening of its political, economic, social and cultural relations with Burma.
