Police recovered the body of a man with apparent gunshot wounds from a boat in the Naf River near Jadimura in Teknaf on Friday, October 16.
Local residents reportedly spotted the body at around 6 am and alerted the authorities, according to Bangladeshi media reports citing police and local witnesses.
Abdul Amin, a village police member from Jadimura, told local media that a gunshot wound was visible above the man’s eye.
Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam confirmed that police had recovered the body and sent it to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The man’s identity was initially unknown to police.
Information separately received by Rohingya Khobor suggested that the deceased may have been a Rohingya resident of a refugee camp in Teknaf. However, conflicting accounts of his name and camp of residence have prevented confirmation of his identity.
Residents also reported hearing gunfire in the Naf River area during the early morning hours.
Some local sources suspected that the shooting involved members of the Arakan Army (AA), but no evidence was available to establish who fired the shots or whether the reported gunfire was connected to the man’s death.
Police said the circumstances of the death remained under investigation.
It was not immediately clear where the man had been shot, how he came to be on the boat or whether anyone else had been travelling with him.
The findings of the post-mortem examination were not available at the time of reporting.
