A Rohingya child was killed in a road accident on the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf Highway on Thursday afternoon, according to eyewitnesses and local sources.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 2:30 p.m. near Balukhali Customs Friendship Road. Witnesses said the child was crossing the highway when he was struck by a vehicle belonging to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Local sources said the child sustained critical injuries in the collision and died as a result of the accident.
The identity and age of the child had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
The incident has sparked concern among residents and members of the refugee community, who called for increased road safety measures along the busy highway and surrounding camp areas.
Road accidents involving refugees and local residents have been reported periodically along the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf Highway, one of the region’s busiest transport routes.
