Teknaf, September 23, 2026 — A woman and a child died when a boat travelling from Myanmar sank near the coast of Teknaf early Tuesday, September 22. Another woman was missing, according to a survivor.
Bangladesh Coast Guard personnel rescued 16 people and handed them over to Teknaf Model Police Station, the station’s officer-in-charge, Md Saiful Islam, told The Daily Star and bdnews24. Police recovered two bodies, which were sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsies.
The boat sank near Karachipara beach in Baharchhara Union. The two reports give different times for the incident, placing it at around 1 a.m. or later in the early hours of Tuesday.
Mohammad Korban Ali, a passenger from Ukhia, told bdnews24 that 19 people had been aboard. He said he and another passenger were returning to Bangladesh after spending about a year in prison in Myanmar.
The passengers’ identities have not been fully established. The Daily Star reported that two of the 16 survivors were Bangladeshi, while bdnews24 reported that eight were Bangladeshi. Police said the survivors would be questioned and their identities checked.
