The Arakan Army (AA) reportedly detained a 47-year-old Rohingya man in Buthidaung Township on Sunday after he returned from Bangladesh, where he had travelled for medical treatment.
The man was identified by a local source as Soyed Noor, son of Monir Ahmed, from Bogri Chaung village.
According to information received by Rohingya Khobor, Soyed Noor was detained at around 10:45 a.m. on September 13 after returning to the area. The source said he had travelled to Bangladesh because of a stomach-related health problem and had undergone surgery there.
Rohingya Khobor could not independently verify the circumstances of his detention, the reason he was reportedly detained, or his current whereabouts.
The Arakan Army had not publicly commented on the reported detention at the time of publication.
The case comes amid continuing concerns over restrictions and detention affecting Rohingya civilians in northern Arakan State. United Nations human rights reporting has documented restrictions on Rohingya movement and access to basic services, as well as cases in which Rohingya returning from Bangladesh were reportedly detained by the Arakan Army.
A Rohingya resident familiar with conditions in the area told Rohingya Khobor that people requiring medical treatment sometimes travel outside the region because of limited access to healthcare.
“Even when someone goes for medical treatment, families are afraid about what could happen when they return,” the resident said.
Rohingya Khobor is seeking further information on Soyed Noor’s whereabouts, the basis for his reported detention and whether his family has been allowed contact with him.
