The Arakan Army reportedly detained a 33-year-old Rohingya man in Buthidaung Township on September 17 over an allegation that he had links with the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, according to local sources who spoke to Rohingya Khobor.
The man was identified as Mohammed Ali, son of Mogul Ahmed, from Maung Gyi Taung village.
Local sources said AA personnel took Mohammed Ali at around 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. They said he was detained after being accused of having connections with ARSA.
Rohingya Khobor has not independently verified the allegation against Mohammed Ali, the circumstances of his detention or his current whereabouts.
It also remains unclear whether he has been informed of any formal accusation, where he is being held or whether his family has been allowed to contact him.
A Rohingya resident familiar with the case said families in the area often fear losing contact with relatives after they are detained.
“When someone is taken, the family often does not know where he has been taken or what will happen to him,” the resident said.
The AA has not publicly commented on Mohammed Ali’s reported detention.
Previous human rights reporting has documented arbitrary detention of Rohingya in Buthidaung and other parts of northern Arakan, including cases in which people were accused of links to ARSA or other armed groups.
A January 2026 UK government country-information report, drawing on documentation by human rights organisations, cited reports of Rohingya men being detained and investigated over alleged connections with ARSA. The report also noted wider concerns over arbitrary arrest and disappearance under AA control.
Those earlier cases do not independently confirm the allegations concerning Mohammed Ali.
Rohingya Khobor is seeking information about his current whereabouts, the stated grounds for his detention and whether his family has been allowed contact with him.
