Press Release
Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO)
Date: June 3, 2026

The Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) extends its warmest congratulations to His Excellency Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, on his election as President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Dr Rahman’s distinguished career in diplomacy, his steadfast commitment to multilateralism, and his principled advocacy for justice and human rights have earned him this prestigious global responsibility. His leadership comes at a critical moment when the international community must demonstrate renewed resolve in addressing protracted crises, including the plight of the Rohingya people.

ARNO acknowledges with deep appreciation Dr Rahman’s longstanding and vocal engagement on the Rohingya issue. Bangladesh, under his leadership and through successive governments, has played a pivotal role in providing refuge to nearly 1.4 million Rohingya forcibly displaced from their ancestral homeland in Arakan (Rakhine State), Myanmar. His continued advocacy has kept the Rohingya crisis on the international agenda and underscored the urgency of a sustainable solution.

The global Rohingya community views Dr Rahman’s election with hope and cautious optimism. We trust that, under his presidency, the United Nations General Assembly will prioritise meaningful action toward ensuring the safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their homeland. Such repatriation must be accompanied by the full restoration of citizenship, fundamental rights, security guarantees, and international protection mechanisms.

ARNO reiterates that accountability for the crimes committed against the Rohingya people, including genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, remains essential for any lasting solution. We call upon the international community, under the leadership of the UNGA President, to intensify efforts to ensure justice and to address the root causes of the crisis.

As a representative organisation of the Rohingya people, ARNO stands ready to engage constructively with Dr Rahman and the United Nations system to advance a rights-based and durable resolution to the Rohingya crisis.

We once again congratulate Dr Khalilur Rahman on this significant achievement and wish him success in his tenure as President of the United Nations General Assembly.
