fire kyuktaw

February 11, 2017

Kyauktaw- Miscreants allegedly belonging to an extremist Buddhist outfit set fire in a Rohingya settlement of Milingom on Sunday.

The fire was set on a pile of hay at around 4am in the morning. The locals were however immediately alerted and came out in large numbers to douse the fire before it could engulf nearby houses.

Local sources say that if the fire was not controlled in time, it would have spread to residential houses and caused extensive damage and might even have resulted in deaths.

Sources also say the number of outsiders from the Rakhine community have peaked in recent days as there seems to be some kind of festival in the neighbouring settlements.

Following the incident a tensed atmosphere is prevailing in the area.
