Bangladesh and the European Union discussed closer trade and investment ties on Wednesday, including possible early progress towards formal negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement, while also agreeing to raise the Rohingya crisis during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.

EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller met State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, according to the ministry.

The two sides discussed ways to deepen cooperation in trade and investment and explored early progress towards formal Bangladesh-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations.

Their discussions also covered migration management, aviation and sustainable development.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the longstanding Bangladesh-EU partnership and reaffirmed their interest in expanding bilateral cooperation.

Bangladesh and the EU also exchanged views on the upcoming United Nations General Assembly and expressed readiness to discuss the Rohingya crisis on its sidelines.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the two sides said such engagement could help keep the prolonged crisis high on the international agenda.

Bangladesh hosts more than one million Rohingya refugees, while the European Union remains one of the major international donors supporting the humanitarian response.

The meeting did not announce any new EU funding commitment, repatriation mechanism or policy initiative concerning the Rohingya crisis.

Miller also congratulated Kobir on his assumption of office as state minister.
