Bangladesh plans to convene a high-level event on the Rohingya crisis during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman has said.
The foreign minister disclosed the plan in a written response to a parliamentary question from Gazipur-5 lawmaker AKM Fazlul Haque Milon.
“We hope that the honourable prime minister will participate as a keynote speaker [at the high-level event]. This will consolidate international support for the Rohingya crisis and repatriation,” Khalilur said, according to the response.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to participate in the event, although further details, including its date, venue and other participants, have not yet been publicly announced.
Khalilur said Bangladesh considers the Rohingya crisis to have originated in Myanmar and believes that a sustainable solution must be found there.
He said the government was continuing to raise the crisis at international forums, including the United Nations, while maintaining contacts with friendly countries, donors and international organisations.
The foreign minister also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had raised the Rohingya issue during recent visits to China and Malaysia.
Khalilur criticised the previous government’s handling of the crisis, claiming that its approach had complicated diplomatic efforts over Rohingya repatriation.
“Our government does not see this crisis as a matter of political campaigning. Rather, we consider this crisis as a serious issue of national interest, security and humanitarian responsibility of Bangladesh,” he said.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly opened on September 8. Its annual General Debate is scheduled for September 22–26 and September 28, bringing heads of state, government leaders and other senior representatives to New York.
