Earlier on Wednesday, 19 Rohingyas has escaped from the Thai detention centre using a piece of cloth to climb down the window of 3rd floor from Thailand’s southern Songkhla province. The city is just a few kilometres away from the Thai-Malaysian border. Thai police have later found two Rohingyas on the following day.
According to the Thai police, the Rohingyas who were victims of human traffickers were kept in detention and were awaiting repatriation to Myanmar. Pairat Pookcharoen, deputy commander of an immigration police unit in the south said, “We’re coordinating with Malaysian authorities to help find the remaining 17 who might have escaped into the border areas.” according to freemalaysiatoday news.
The United States and rights groups have criticised Thai authorities for not doing enough to protect victims of trafficking in the past.
